I am looking forward to an amazing year on campus! I am excited to meet and talk with everyone more! I’m beyond excited to help build a community at Apartments that is friendly, inclusive, supportive and fun, and have a great year together! Let’s yap anytime, anywhere, about whatever you want. On campus you’ll find me locking in at The Hub with a coffee (I can only focus amid chaos) or strutting around campus as if it’s my personal runway.
What You Need to Know About the Soon-to-be-Launched Data Science Major
One of the things I love most about CMC is the many wonderful opportunities and the sense of community. I am from Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi, studying Environmental Analysis on the Science track with a sequence in Asian American Studies. Data Science is my major, but I really love cybersecurity. One of my favorite things about CMC is the tight-knit, vibrant community, and as an RA, I’m excited to help keep that spirit of support and fun alive! I love volleyball (intramural team?), K-Pop (any Carats?), Greco-Roman mythology, books, blind boxes, and creative mediums like crochet, stamp carving, and painting! Fostering community motivates me as a Romero Success Coach, CPB’s Vice-President of Creative Programming, and as Club Soda’s Co-President!
In response to such concerns, Mark Huber, Professor of Mathematics and Statistics, explained that CMC is intentionally constructing the data science major to distinguish it from the computer science major. To determine the major requirements, the faculty committee looked at data science majors at other universities, considered CMC’s resources in statistics, math, and computer science, and examined the guidelines set by the American Statistical Association for data science majors. With plans to hire new professors specializing in data science, CMC currently has the faculty and resources needed to launch a data science major. Lately I’ve found myself thinking about how our class functions, and how us students can build each other up. As a first-generation, low-income student, I understand the numerous challenges that come with college, even when it’s virtual. As a transfer student, I am so excited to get to know my grade (and everyone on campus) even better as one of the senior apartment RAs.
I want to represent the whole class and your ideas, dreams, and wishes. More accessible virtual events to accommodate people from all over the world. I have so many ideas for us to connect during this time.
Introducing the 2025-26 RAs!
When it was their turn to talk, they insisted that Trump won because his supporters were determined to amplify racism and misogyny. As the class gave their answers – economic malaise, Harris’s lack of time, Biden’s unpopularity – I noticed a group of classmates making incredulous, repulsed facial expressions whenever someone answered. Because of this, there are some concerns about the major’s emphasis on math and statistics and lack of offerings in computer science. They’re good people who could work for him though, in New York. And so people—I do think the right’s reaction to Mamdani has been a little hysterical. And I also just think, practically speaking, New York is a huge city.
Class of 2024: First-Year Class President Candidate Statements
I love to cook in Janie’s, go to the farmer’s market, craft a bunch of random things, and yap, so I hope to catch y’all at my open door hours. I love being active on campus and building relationships with my peers by learning about their culture, interests, and experiences! I’m excited to help make our dorm feel like home and am pumped to be working with Kate (my co-RA) to plan some awesome events.
As students at an institution whose mission is to prepare us for thoughtful and productive lives, we have an obligation to be better than the hateful and divisive rhetoric consuming our civic discourse. After class, I asked those same classmates to talk. They seemed to think that whoever was daring enough to challenge their opinions only disagreed because they were racist and misogynistic, too. These classmates halted our productive discussion, made the class feel uncomfortable, and made me feel alienated. Later in the discussion, another classmate specifically accused me of condoning racism and misogyny because I went to an election watch party for Republican interns.
U.S. Foreign Policy Outlook After the 2024 Election
- Though the person later sincerely apologized, this episode reflects a broader problem with political discourse in the CMC community.
- At CMC, I am majoring in PPE-Gov, and I have an intermittent sequence in imposter syndrome.
- I love volleyball (intramural team?), K-Pop (any Carats?), Greco-Roman mythology, books, blind boxes, and creative mediums like crochet, stamp carving, and painting!
- On campus, I am involved with the Black Women’s Collective, Scholar Community, and recently started the Claremont Cybersecurity Club.
- Kristol, the son of famed conservative intellectual Irving Kristol, was born and raised in New York City.
I also hope to highlight the diversity that makes our class so great, by spotlighting groups like Mi Gente, BSU, SAGA, APAM and more! During high school, I was a basketball captain, principal string bassist in the orchestra, interned for my Congressman, and founded my school’s first Mental Health Awareness Club. Having graduated high school in China, I’m acutely aware of the importance of bridging cultural and social gaps, and existing alongside each other as full humans. CMC is a place where all of us should feel fully, genuinely and authentically at home. Vote for a president who will continue to make CMC the best place to be! We have already established ourselves as the most cohesive class that CMC has seen to date, and it is my desire as President to keep it that way.
CMC students deem the new data science major as “very admirable and a necessary step for CMC to remain a leading national liberal arts college,” according to David Roman ‘22, a current public policy major with a data science sequence. “Teaching a data science course like Econ 160 involves a lot more in-class lab work, where professors present a lecture and students operate software in class,” said Batta in response to the differences between teaching a traditional accounting course and Accounting Data Analytics. While the data science major is intended to make students experts in that realm, CMC will continue to offer the data science sequence but plans to change its name to distinguish it from the major. However, the sequence offers students familiarity with data science.” In other cmc markets review words, CMC intends the sequence to be interdisciplinary, as students must also complete a major. The data science major will prepare students for a data-driven world with machine intelligence.” Ideally, students majoring in data science and computer science will participate together in clinic projects during their junior year.
- We’re also filled with what ancient traditions call “the breath of life,” which is prana in Sanskrit, ruach in Hebrew, and psyche in Greek.
- My interests are all over the place and I love talking about them so please DM and let’s chat!
- I am an International Relations major and I recently studied abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark.
- I’m always around campus whether it be studying, chilling at the hub or hanging out and sunbathing with my friends!
- If there’s a class-wide event you want to see happen, I’ll make sure it happens.
- Following the 2024 election, Claremont McKenna College’s Keck Center for International and Strategic Studies hosted a discussion exploring the impact that a second Trump presidency will have on U.S. foreign relations.
I’m an economics-accounting major, but in my free time, I love spending time outdoors, reading books, and playing or watching various sports. Addressing that sentiment—in a moment of rare optimism for the night—Professor Taw encouraged students to still pursue such work in the short term and urged them to learn how the system works so they can effect meaningful change later in their careers. During the Q&A portion of the discussion, students conveyed a general sense of unease regarding how a second Trump presidency will impact America’s standing in the world—from its credibility amongst allies to its posture toward international law and human rights.
On campus, I’m involved with SOURCE Nonprofit Consulting and Claremont Women in Business. I look forward to helping build an amazing Berger community alongside Crystal and cannot wait to meet everyone! I’m from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and I’m dual majoring in International Relations and French with a Leadership Studies Sequence. When—not if—we see each other on campus, please please please come say hi!
Bill Kristol Says He Would Vote For Zohran Mamdani for New York City Mayor
Outside of these random facts, why should you vote for me to be your first-year Class President? I haven’t declared a major yet but I am thinking of PPE (Philosophy, Politics, and Economics), PPA (Philosophy and Public Affairs), International Relations or some combination of those subjects. As of now, I spend my day (when I’m not doing work) cooking, making bracelets, listening to Philosophize This, and scrolling through TikTok (probably my favorite thing to do). The impacts of a pandemic turned our lives upside down and tragic events called for us to re-examine America as we know it.
Henry Long 2025 Class-Elected Commencement Speech
You’re imperfect, and you always will be, on this side of paradise. Graduates, the world you enter is a wonderful place, but it has its dangers. But without the strange correspondence between our minds and reality, none of this research would be possible. Just think for a second about how miraculous that is.
I’m always down to chat and connect with new people, so please don’t hesitate to reach out! Around campus I am a member of the leadership board for the Sexuality and Gender Alliance at CMC and I play on the Women’s Rugby Team! I’m always around campus whether it be studying, chilling at the hub or hanging out and sunbathing with my friends!
I am beyond excited to get to know my residents as well and the new faces joining the CMC community! My name is Prateek and I am so excited to be one of your Crown Hall RAs! My favorite food is any preparation of a potato, and I am OBSESSED with Jelly Cats and Squishmallows. CMC is such a tight-knit and special community, and I’m so excited to help continue building a strong, supportive, and fun space in Berger.
The CMC community must re-commit itself to constructive dialogue.
If working and middle class voters cannot afford groceries, they certainly cannot afford to be single issue voters for social justice. Though the person later sincerely apologized, this episode reflects a broader problem with political discourse in the CMC community. “Perhaps racism and sexism played a role for some voters,” our professor responded.
Bill Kristol Says He Would Vote For Zohran Mamdani for New York City Mayor
We’ve had to be the most innovative class yet to deal with all this change- which I am proud to say we embraced beautifully. I got to see people with last names like mine hold political office, lead businesses, and serve as community leaders. I’m Zane Yamamoto and I’m running to be your first-year class president. With that in mind, feel free to message me any time– and vote for me this weekend for FYCP!
